Student Assistant, Academic Coach 

Job Description

Academic coaches provide one-to-one coaching sessions and facilitate academic success workshops that support students in developing the skills, habits, and mindsets essential for academic success at Cal Poly. Academic coaches support students in areas such as goal setting, time and stress management, study strategies, and navigating academic transitions. Through collaborative, student-centered conversations and workshops, coaches help students build self-efficacy, academic confidence, and momentum toward degree completion in an inclusive and supportive environment. This position is particularly well suited for students who are interested in peer support, student success, and educational equity. 

Compensation and Estimated Hours

$17.50/hour; Approximately 8 hours per week, with additional hours based on availability and appointment demand 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate one-to-one academic coaching sessions and workshops that support goal setting, academic planning, effective study strategies, and the development of productive academic habits and self-regulation skills 
  • Support students in identifying academic challenges, developing actionable success plans, and connecting with appropriate campus resources 
  • Create a learning support environment that is inclusive, respectful, and supportive of students from diverse backgrounds 
  • Maintain accurate appointment and attendance records 
  • Communicate professionally with students, peers, and program staff 
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development activities 
  • Adhere to OWL department policies, including payroll and scheduling expectations
  • Maintain FERPA confidentiality and professionalism in all student interactions 
  • Support additional academic success initiatives and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Active enrollment in a Cal Poly baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program
  • Completion of at least two full years of college after high school 
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, maintained throughout employment 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds 
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills with the ability to follow through on responsibilities 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in learning support roles (e.g., tutoring, study sessions, supplemental instruction, academic coaching) 
  • Familiarity with the transfer student experience 
  • Ability to commit to a full academic year
