Job Description
Workshop leaders facilitate structured, collaborative weekly meetings for historically challenging courses, supporting students in strengthening course understanding, study strategies, and academic confidence. Leaders attend lectures for their assigned course and design interactive, student-centered workshop sessions that integrate what to learn with how to learn. Through collaborative activities and guided practice, workshop leaders help students develop effective learning strategies in an inclusive and supportive environment.
Compensation and Estimated Hours
$17.86/hour; Average of 12 hours per week, depending on course assignment and availability
Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend all assigned science or math class meetings and promote workshops to enrolled students through in-class announcements and outreach
- Plan and facilitate weekly workshop sessions using collaborative, student-centered approaches that reinforce course concepts, emphasize skill development, and promote metacognition
- Create learning environments that are inclusive, respectful, and supportive of students from diverse backgrounds
- Maintain accurate attendance and participation records
- Communicate professionally with students, peers, and program staff
- Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development activities
- Adhere to OWL department policies, including payroll and scheduling expectations
- Maintain FERPA confidentiality and professionalism in all student interactions
- Support additional academic success initiatives and special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Active enrollment in a Cal Poly baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program
- Completion of at least one full year of college enrollment (not based on AP or dual credit units)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, maintained throughout employment
- Final course grade of B or better in the course(s) supported, or demonstrated proficiency as approved by the program coordinator
- Strong communication skills and ability to engage with students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in learning support roles (e.g., supplemental instruction, tutoring, study sessions, academic coaching)
- Prior experience facilitating group discussions
- Ability to commit to a full academic year
