Instructional Student Assistant, Study Session Leader
Job Description
Study Session leaders facilitate structured, collaborative group meetings for historically challenging lower-division STEM courses that strengthen understanding of course concepts, promote effective learning strategies, and build academic confidence. Sessions are designed to support students in an inclusive environment and to complement course instruction. This position is an excellent opportunity to strengthen discipline-specific knowledge, communication skills, and professional competencies while contributing to student success.
Compensation and Estimated Hours
$17.86/hour; Approximately 8 hours per week, with additional hours based on availability and subject demand
Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitate recurring study groups using collaborative, student-centered learning strategies
- Support student learning by reinforcing course concepts and promoting effective study and metacognitive strategies
- Create learning environments that are inclusive, respectful, and supportive of students from diverse backgrounds
- Maintain accurate appointment and attendance records
- Communicate professionally with students, peers, and program staff
- Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development activities
- Adhere to OWL department policies, including payroll and scheduling expectations
- Maintain FERPA confidentiality and professionalism in all student interactions
- Support additional academic success initiatives and special projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Active enrollment in a Cal Poly baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate program
- Completion of at least one full year of college enrollment (not based on AP or dual credit units)
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, maintained throughout employment
- Final course grade of B or better in the course(s) supported, or demonstrated proficiency as approved by the program coordinator
- Strong communication skills and ability to engage with students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in learning support roles (e.g., supplemental instruction, tutoring, study sessions, academic coaching)
- Prior experience facilitating group discussions
- Ability to commit to a full academic year
