Supplemental Instruction at Maritime Academy

Supplemental instructors (SIs) are tutors who are assigned to a specific class. They offer more directed support on the assigned class.

Supplemental Instruction Tutors at Maritime can help with:

  • Practicing course concepts in an active, collaborative environment

  • Breaking down complex material into manageable steps

  • Strengthening study strategies and study habits

  • Building confidence by taking risks and learning from mistakes

  • Preparing more effectively for quizzes, labs, and exams

SIs work with students in their assigned class to help them understand assignments and larger concepts. They work with the professor to gain knowledge of assignments and expectations. However SIs are not teaching assistants, and as such they are not required to attend every class nor do they grade papers or assignments. SIs will work with an OWL learning support specialist and the professor to determine whether the SI will attend any class sessions. SIs often work 1-1, but they also work with small groups, and lead study sessions before tests and projects.

SIs are most useful in classes with high DFW outcomes or classes with highly-specialized and/or difficult assignments. If you would like to request a supplemental instructor for your class and have a student in mind to lead an SI for your course, please send an email to writingandlearning@calpoly.edu; please note: an SI tutor is not guaranteed. Once paired, an Office of Writing and Learning staff member will meet with the professor and SI tutor to create a contract to ensure an effective partnership.

Recommendations

If you have any recommendations for Maritime SI tutors, please encourage the student to visit our Student Employment webpage and complete the application form, which will include an opportunity for the student to list you as a recommender. We are looking for students who not only excel in their classes, but show interpersonal skills and a desire to help others.

*Maritime supplemental instruction is a modified learning support offering that is loosely based on the UMKC model.
